In heating mode, the valve directs the refrigerant through the outdoor unit’s heat exchanger where the outside air transfers heat to into the indoors. When the valve is cooled, refrigerant will loop through the evaporator coil inside the indoor unit and absorb heat into the indoor air, then release the heat outdoors.
