The Lennox 72H67 Crankcase Heater 460V is a resistance heater which maintains a specific oil temperature within the crankcase of an HVAC system. It is a common place in commercial refrigeration situations where huge compressors are needed to retain areas chilled. The crankcase heater maintains the oil at the optimal temperature and insures free compressor operation. It becomes thick and sluggish so the oil doesn’t turn the compressor as easily when the oil is too cold. As it turns out, too cold can work against your oil as well — oil that is too cold can break down and lose its lubricating properties. The crankcase heater prevents these problems by keeping the oil hot enough to allow easy movement of the compressor parts, but not hot enough to wear away the compressor parts.
