This was not a piston type of compressor, but a scroll type that Trane used for this model for efficiency purposes. In the closed compartment, two intertwined coils work as a rapid pump to compress the refrigerant gas. This design was equivalent to a 2-ton capacity, sufficient for managing moderate cooling loads in houses or small structures. The Trane COM8944 used R-22 refrigerant, a choice with increasing ecological constraints. This refrigerant was compressed, the compressor started the main process of heat exchange in the Trane HVAC system.
