The Sporlan Controls 163746 is a 20-ton thermal expansion valve  intended for use in HVAC systems containing R407C refrigerant. Maintaining system functionality requires controlling the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator coil, which is what this valve does. This is how it operates: Warm refrigerant gas condenses into a liquid as it enters the evaporator and absorbs heat from the surrounding air. The TXV senses the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant as it exits the evaporator. The TXV opens to let additional liquid refrigerant into the evaporator, increasing its cooling capacity, if the temperature is too high, indicating inadequate cooling. On the other hand, the TXV inhibits the flow if the temperature is too low, which could cause ice to form on the coil.
