The Trane MOT9231 is a 1 hp ECM motor developed for HVAC applications. ECM motors stand for electronic commutation motor, and these types of motors are different from typical AC motors with regards to the use of permanent magnets and the possible control by electronic methods. This is equivalent to several significant advantages. Another advantage of permanent magnets is that they get rid of brushes, which are a wearing component of AC motors. Also, the electronics make it possible to have close control of the speed of the motor, thus using far less energy than the normal motors. The features two selectable speeds, thus the system can regulate the flow of air depending on whether it is cooling or heating.
