How To Replace a Bad Transformer In an AC Unit?

A transformer transforms electrical energy from one alternating-current circuit to another or multiple current circuits. It is used in low-voltage devices to reduce the voltage of conventional power circuits. HVAC Transformers change voltage using electromagnetic induction. Current is generated in a secondary winding as magnetic flux lines build up and collapse with changes in the electric current traveling through the primary coil.

These HVAC transformer parts are used in a range of HVAC applications to transfer the electricity passing from one AC signal to various current circuits. PartsHnC is one of the best online eCommerce platforms to buy HVAC transformers and other HVAC parts and accessories.

Signs your transformer is in bad condition:

  • Unusual noise: Noise from the transformer is not normal. If your transformer creates a humming noise or vibrates, then the transformer is in critical condition.
  • Tripped circuit breaker: Failed transformers’ circuit breakers will trip. Because of voltage surge, a significant breakdown happens in the equipment.
  • Air conditioner not working: The air conditioning system does not allow the air conditioner to start because of the protective mechanism. This mechanism protects your HVAC system from severe damage.

What is the lifespan of HVAC transformers?

The ANSI Standard C57 states. The lifespan of an HVAC transformer might range from 20 to 30 years, or possibly longer. Your HVAC transformer parts' lifetime also depends on the workload.

How to replace a damaged transformer in an air conditioner unit?

  1. Shut off the complete power supply to your air conditioner unit. It is a mandatory step for safety purposes.
  2. Take the help of an expert. Call a technician if any problem happens in your HVAC unit.
  3. With the help of soldering iron unsolder the old transformer's wire leads from the primary AC unit's leads. During the reinstallation process, leave the air conditioner's wire leads dangling.
  4. Use a screwdriver to remove the transformer from its mounting.
  5. Insert the new transformer in your air conditioner system in the exact location of the old one. Use screws and bolts to secure the transformer to the mounting area with the help of a screwdriver. Ensure the connection is tightened securely without squeezing the system's loosened wires.
  6. Use a wire stripper to remove a 1/4 of insulation from across all four loose transformer cables.
  7. Twist together the exposed wires of the transformer's black wire, and the air-conditioning system's loosened black wire from the prior transformer setup.
  8. Do the same process as step 6 with the orange, white, and red transformer wires. Every color should match the colored cables that run from the air conditioner.
  9. Use a soldering iron to solder all four-wire connections. Secure the uncovered soldier and cabling with electrical tape for each connection.
  10. Do as step 8 for the blue cable on the second lead screw next to it.
  11. Restart the power to the air conditioner. Every function should be tested.

What are the reasons for failing HVAC transformers?

  • A blown transformer is most often the result of a bad contactor. When a contactor malfunctions, the complete unit is put under a considerable degree of strain. A blown transformer occurs when the tension or strain gets too much for the HVAC system to handle.
  • Wiring Issues - Within the transformer, loose cables or wires might cause a short circuit and potentially damage the transformer.
  • Power surge - A power surge, which is a type of electrical breakdown, can trigger a transformer failure.
