The Rheem-Ruud 62-24305-82 Hot Surface Ignitor (HSI) is used for gas-fired furnaces or boilers of Rheem, Ruud, and possibly other manufacturers. This little part but essentialto the safe and reliable procedure of igniting your furnace during heating operation. This is how it works and below are the procedures to be followed. When you switch on your heating system the furnace control board issues a signal to the hot surface ignitor. The HSI is heated up soon after it receives the signal due to the high electrical resistance it possesses. This heating process only lasts for several seconds. At a certain temperature, the HSI glows red and ignites the gas that flows through the burner assembly to an explosion.
