The Trane COM13118 Scroll Compressor, while no longer in production, was a workhorse built for efficient cooling in home and small commercial settings (about 54 pounds). This used R-22 refrigerant, which has rising environmental implications. A durable, self-contained device (hermetic) made of cast iron with brazed stub tubes for stable refrigerant circulation. Unlike standard piston compressors, this Trane type used a scroll mechanism to ensure efficient performance. Inside the sealed casing, two interlaced scrolls work as a high-speed pump, compressing refrigerant gas.
