The Carrier KH74HV161 is a part called an accumulator for Carrier brazed-connection HVAC systems. This is a huge cylindrical container constructed from copper with bi-metal for enhanced durability that helps to enhance the refrigerant flow and shield the compressor in your system. During cycling on and off, one notices that pressure in the circuit containing the refrigerant may also fluctuate. It is designed to take in these pressure fluctuations and thus shield the compressor from damage due to fluctuating flow. In system operation, the accumulator can hold extra liquid refrigerant so as to supply the evaporator coil with adequate refrigerant to absorb heat.
