The Lennox 75M49 Solenoid is a electromechanical component that controls or unlocks mixed-heat heating and cooling system or cooling only HVAC systems such as air conditioners and heat pumps. It serves like a valve but rather than the convention physical pressure it uses electrical impulses. When supplied with 24V AC power the solenoid produces a magnetic field that opens a channel in the valve through which refrigerant can flow in a particular way. when the magnetic field is off the collapses and shuts the passage while the refrigerant flow is redirected in the opposite direction.
