The Emerson Flow Control (Alco) 059144 Dampener/Muffler is an equipment used for reducing pulsations and pressure swings in the fluid lines most commonly in HVAC systems. These pulsations, due to the cyclic nature of refrigerants in compressors or other equipment, cause noise, vibration and in extreme cases, to system components. The dampener/muffler is designed to attenuate these pressure waves, that is, to decrease their amplitude and subsequently prevent the waves from traveling through the system. This is done by having an internal structure normally in the form of several chambers or baffles that convert the pulsation energy into heat. When incorporated in HVAC systems, can easily cut down on noise levels and enhance system stability as well as the life of equipment.
